COVID-19

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China.

How is this study designed?

Study Type: Interventional (Clinical Trial) Estimated Enrollment: 400 participants Primary Purpose: Treatment Actual Study Start Date: April 9, 2020 Estimated Study Completion Date: December 1, 2021

Who is this study for?

The PATCH trial tests hydroxychloroquine as a treatment in patients with COVID-19 and a preventative medication in health care workers at high risk of contracting COVID-19.

  1. For this study we are seeking EMERGENCY MEDICINE or INFECTIOUS DISEASE physicians or nurses at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania or Pen Presbyterian Medical Center
  2. Must be scheduled to work greater than 20 hours per week over the next two months
  3. No fever, cough, shortness of breath over last two weeks

What should I expect?

The PATCH trial (Prevention And Treatment of COVID-19 with Hydroxychloroquine) is funded investigator-initiated trial that includes 3 cohorts.

  • Cohort 1: a double-blind placebo controlled trial of high dose HCQ as a treatment for home bound COVID-19 positive patients;
  • Cohort 2: a randomized study testing different doses of HCQ in hospitalized patients;
  • Cohort 3: a double blind placebo controlled trial of low dose HCQ as a preventative medicine in health care workers.
